Frequently asked questions

About dental implants here at Ropergate Dental Care & Implant Studio

  1. Do I need one implant for every missing tooth?

No. If you’re missing several teeth in a row, we can often replace them with an implant bridge. This is a row of connected teeth held by implants at each end. Two implants will usually support a bridge of three teeth, and sometimes four. Fewer implants mean less surgery and a lower cost. Where the gaps are in different parts of your mouth, each gap is treated separately, with its own implant or small implant bridge.

  2. Implant bridge or individual implants: which is better?

It depends on how many teeth are missing and how much bone you have where they used to be.

    • Individual implants: each tooth stands on its own, so you can floss between them like natural teeth. If one ever has a problem, it can be treated without touching the others. They need more implants and enough bone at every site.
    • Implant bridge: fewer implants carry more teeth, so it usually costs less. It also works well where bone has shrunk in the middle of a gap. You clean underneath it with an interdental brush or water flosser rather than regular floss.

Dr Harrison will show you on your scan which option suits your mouth and why.

  3. How is an implant bridge different from a normal bridge or a partial denture?

A conventional bridge is anchored to the natural teeth on either side of the gap, which have to be filed down to hold crowns. An implant bridge is held by implants in the jawbone, so your healthy neighbouring teeth are left alone. A partial denture clips onto your remaining teeth and comes out for cleaning. Many people find it can rock when they chew. An implant bridge is fixed in place and doesn’t come out.

  4. I lost my teeth years ago. Is it too late for implants?

Usually not, but the longer a gap has been there, the more likely it is that some jawbone has shrunk away. It’s also common for the teeth either side to drift into the space. Our scans show exactly how much bone you have. If there isn’t quite enough, a bone graft can rebuild it before or during implant surgery. For upper back teeth, this is sometimes a sinus lift. We’ll tell you at your consultation if you’d need either and how it affects your timeline.

  5. Will I be left with gaps while the implants heal?

Not if you’d rather not be. While the implants bond with the bone, you can wear a temporary option such as a temporary bridge or a small removable denture. [Practice to confirm which options they offer.] It’s there purely so you can smile and eat comfortably until your permanent teeth are ready.

  6. How long does treatment for several missing teeth take?

Most patients go from implant surgery to their finished teeth in 3 to 6 months. The implants need that time to fuse with the jawbone before they can take the full force of chewing. The main steps are consultation and scans, implant placement, healing, then impressions and fitting your bridge or crowns. Extractions, bone grafting or gum disease that needs treating first will add time. Your plan will set out your own timeline.

  7. How do I look after an implant bridge?

Brush twice a day, and clean under the bridge once a day with an interdental brush or water flosser. That’s the area where food and plaque build up. Individual implants can be flossed like natural teeth. You’ll also need to see our hygienist at least twice a year. They’ll clean around the implants with tools that won’t scratch them and check for early signs of gum problems.

  8. How long will my implants last?

The implants are made to stay in your jaw for the long term, and with good care, many people keep them for decades. The bridge or crowns on top take the wear of daily chewing, like natural teeth, and may need repair or replacement eventually. Every implant we place comes with a 5-year guarantee, as long as you attend two hygiene visits a year and follow your maintenance plan.
